Reduce Energy Use DC 2021

I am happy to announce that the Reduce Energy Use DC initiative was kicked-off last week in recognition of Earth Day! It would be great if you would take the pledge and share this information with your constituents and challenge them to sign the pledge. You can share information about Reduce Energy Use DC on your social media platforms and your community newsletter. We can provide our social media tool kit and you can also provide a media post for the Reduce Energy Use DC Blog.

Last year the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), Pepco, the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU), along with more than 20 environmental, business and community groups, launched a new initiative to engage District residents on ways they can use energy more efficiently, take steps to reduce energy use at home, and save money, while helping fight climate change. The Reduce Energy Use DC initiative asked District of Columbia residents to take a pledge to reduce their energy use and we provided those that signed up with tips on easy ways to save and lower their energy bill.

Even though the initiative was launched at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when most residents were sheltering in place at home, over 2,400 District of Columbia residents signed the pledge and participated in the initiative. At the conclusion of the pledge period, we continued to engage residents throughout the summer on simple steps they can take that will help them lower their energy bills, while helping to protect the environment. We want to thank the Council of the District of Columbia and the Mayor Muriel Bowser for advancing “District of Columbia Energy Efficiency Day” by resolution and proclamation.

Based on the current state of the pandemic, the District continues to be cautious, but has begun to modify some COVID-19 restrictions. This means that more residents will begin to leave their homes to return back to school, work and outdoors activities. However, we must continue to find ways for residents to use less electricity to power their homes.

All District residents can voluntarily take the Reduce Energy Use DC pledge. Participants will be entered into one of more than 25 random drawings starting in May for a chance to win a $300 credit on their energy bill. District residents can sign up and take the pledge by visiting www.ReduceEnergyUseDC.com, or by texting “SaveMore” to 52886, or calling 202-872-2020 or toll free 855-673-3823. The random drawings will begin in May. The pledge period closes July 8, 2021. Once closed, Pepco customers in the District will continue to receive energy-savings tips through Weekly Energy Usage Reports that compare individual energy usage to the prior week’s consumption. Additional tips will be shared through social media and at www.ReduceEnergyUseDC.com. The initiative will run through August 2021.

I have attached a fact sheet that provides additional information. Remember to take the pledge and encourage others to join this important initiative. We are available for any questions that you may have.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
